This year, you will participate in a 40 book challenge. It's really a 40 point challenge. For each book you read, you will receive a certain number of points depending on how hard the text is, how many pages, etc. By the end of the year, you will need to have at least 40 points! It's very doable if you work hard to read about one book a week on your reading level. To accomplish this, you will need to be reading each night at home!
In order to get book points, you must have your reading log filled out in your reading folder (which stays at school) and you must have Ms. B sign each book you finish within one week of finishing it!
Book Review of the Month
At the end of each month, you will have a book review due on a book that you read and had Ms. B sign off on within that month. This book review should be a thoughtful, well- written critique of the book. This is not a book report or a book summary! Below is a list of requirements for each book review.
Organized into a minimum of 4 paragraphs:
The first paragraph must contain the book title, the author, and how many stars you give the book (out of 5). You must include a brief summary of the book (a few sentences) that does not give spoilers!
The 2 body paragraphs must explore at least two different topics about the book that you liked or didn't like. (Examples: favorite characters, favorite event that happened, connections to the story, why you liked the story as a whole, what the author did well or didn't do well, etc.) You can discuss anything you'd like!
The last paragraph will be very short (a few sentences) and must include who you think would enjoy reading the book, or who should stay away! This should wrap up your overall feelings of the book.
Writing of the Month
Each month, you will have a writing of the month due. This is a piece of writing that you free wrote and is not one of the essays that we will write together in class. The purpose of this writing is to allow you the freedom to publish whatever you'd like- something you have free choice over! I will give you a theme to write about each month, or you can choose a different writing to submit. This is an easy grade to make, since it will be more about the effort and the creativity placed into the writing than the writing itself!
Requirements: * This must be an original story that you have created independently. No one can help you create this. * Your story must show fifth grade conventions- organized into paragraphs, correct grammar, complete sentences, etc. * It should be around a page in length. (Longer is great!) * Effort and creativity must be present to receive full credit!
